When Is ERCES Required?
An ERCES may be required for new construction, renovations, or existing buildings under San Antonio’s amendments, which require these systems in most new and existing buildings when coverage or occupancy thresholds trigger code-driven compliance. Common areas of concern include high-rises, parking garages, basements, underground structures, stairwells, mechanical rooms, and commercial buildings constructed with materials that interfere with radio waves. ERCES may also be required when local legal requirements tied to building codes, safety codes, occupancy thresholds, and public-safety coverage apply. Requirements vary by building and jurisdiction, so property owners should confirm the applicable San Antonio fire-code requirements, including the International Fire Code, local safety standards, and broader compliance obligations, with the appropriate local authorities. Buildings are generally exempt only if they are under 4 stories and each floor is less than 50,000 square feet.
TC Tech Systems begins with a signal propagation survey, also known as a benchmark test, RF survey, or grid test. Using calibrated testing equipment, our team measures existing inbound and outbound public safety radio coverage throughout the property against the minimum -95 dBm and DAQ 3.0 benchmark. The results help determine whether an enhancement system is necessary and provide the information needed for proper system design and coordination with the local Authority Having Jurisdiction. Coordination with the San Antonio Fire Department is also part of project approvals.
